DhiTV Officially Inaugurate

The first private television channel in the Maldives, DhiTV was officially inaugurated by President Gayoom on 1 July at a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge.

DhiTV was founded by local business tycoon Mr. Champa Mohamed Moosa. His partners in the project include Khaleel, Nawaal and Masood, all come from TV backgoround. Although DhiTV was officially inaugrated on 1 July, it began broadcasting on Friday 16 May. Prior to this, the only local TV channel was the state owned TV station, TVM.

Presently DhiTV is being broadcast via cable, and parent company Broadcasting Maldives has already announced plans to move in to satellite transmission in the future. The channel will host all general varieties of programming, running from 2:00 pm to 12:00 am. You can now watch DhiTV on channel 50 MediaNet and 3 on BNet.

When I was in school, I was into public speaking and debating. It was something I really liked, and did very well. However, after school only few occasions I was on stage.

I was working in Maldives Ports Authority in mid 90s, and one day a dear friend of mine, late Ali Niyaz came to me and said, Mauhadhu, is organizing a debating competition among past pupils associations, and he wanted EPSS past pupils to takes part, and requested me, if I would want to be part of it. I told him, I have on been on stage for a long time, but will surely take part.

I did very well at the competition, and won 3rd place among all participants. After the competition, we recorded a debate for TVM, and it’s this debate that gave me the chance to break into TVM.

Although, I knew Tayyib even before, after the debate Tayyib produced a series of programs with me. All my earlier shows were religious programs.

I can say, it all started because of Ali Niyaz, and Tayyib. Although I was comfortable on stage, it took me a while to get comfortable on camera.

I took a great interest as a TV presenter, and soon I was offered many shows. I was very lucky to have to host most the shows with Khaleel, who already was an experienced and admired presenter. 

Police summon minister for questioning

A minister and state minister were summoned to the police station for questioning on the request of criminal court following a poll on state television earlier this month, which the court deemed disrespectful towards the judiciary.
Dr Ahmed Ali Sawad, the minister of tourism, arts and culture, and Thoyyib Mohamed Waheed, the state minister, were questioned along with the programme’s presenter, Adam Miqdhah, and Ibrahim Khaleel, the managing director of the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation.
The court requested a police investigation on 10 June after Television Maldives (TVM) aired a programme, “Q&A with Miqdhah”, asking viewers whether they thought the ongoing legal dispute over Herathera Resort remained unresolved because the courts were too slow; 70 per cent of viewers said yes.
Speaking to Minivan News today, Sawad said police informed him they wanted to verify a few details, but he chose to remain silent.
“I was quite surprised. I didn’t expect it in this day and age, when we are struggling for our fundamental rights for freedom.”
Sawad said he could not comment on the programme as he had not watched it.
Miqdad said he too chose to remain silent during the police interrogation. He added he was unsure whether the investigation was being conducted because of the views expressed on the show or the poll.
TVM Deputy General Mohamed Asif said he did not understand why the investigation was necessary.
“From Haveeru Daily, I learnt that the judge wanted to clarify whether we had disrespected the court on purpose,” he said.
In an interview with the newspaper on 11 June, Judge Abdullah Mohamed said the poll would tarnish the reputation of the judiciary and foster a perception that the courts were incompetent.
The president’s office released a statement today, expressing concern over Sawad being questioned by police.
“At a time when international parties have noted that the media is very free in the Maldives and are congratulating the country for it, the president believes incidents like this could negatively impact their view of the country,” the statement reads. “Further, this is an obstacle to ministers freely carrying out their responsibilities.”

MDP Presidential Primary debate concluded successfully

The historic live debate between Maldivian Democratic Party's presidential primary candidates concluded successfully last night. The event was organised by DhiFM and was broadcast live on both DhiFM radio as well as on national TV, TVM. Presented by Khaleel and Masood, the debate was a complete success and covered a whole range of topics related to their campaign. In addition to policy questions on how each of the candidate would solve major public issues, such as housing, health, education and transport, questions were asked on various aspects of the democratic campaign which is expected to produce the first ever multiparty elections in the Maldives within the next 12 months.

Maldives First Private TV Broadcasts Test Signal Via Cable

Maldives Broadcasting Company's DhiTV has started broadcasting its test signal. This is the first time that a private company in Maldives has broadcast a TV signal.
 
The managing director of the company, Ibrahim Khaleel said DhiTV's test signal had begun on Friday [16 May] and could be seen by MediaNet and B-Net cable subscribers, Channel 50 and 3 respectively.

"The test signal is being sent to check the audiovisual quality and to confirm other technical stuff," he said. "Occasionally you might see someone speaking live on the channel, that's just for testing though." He added that they might occasionally show songs on the channel also for testing purposes.
Khaleel said that although the test signal had begun transmitting it was still not confirmed when the official launching of the service will be. He said that once the test signal had served its purpose and they had managed to gather all the information they required from it, an official launch date would be announced.
The Maldives Broadcasting Company has said that DhiTV will show news, current affairs programmes, sports, entertainment shows and programmes aimed towards creating awareness about different issues, and programmes aimed specifically for the youth.
"Our programmes will be aimed towards all age denominations and both genders," said Khaleel, who is also a senior official at the DhiFM radio channel.
The company also said that even though currently they were providing the service via cable TV networks, in the future they planned to broadcast via satellite too.
"We are finishing up the technical aspects of the project," Khaleel said. "Everything from stage designing, equipment installation, testing are all being done by Maldivians."
The Maldives Broadcasting Company was licensed to broadcast by the Information Ministry in December last year. They began sending their test TV signal five months after. The Information Ministry has also issued broadcasting licences to Villa TV and Atoll TV.

National Broadcasting Corporation established

President Mohamed Nasheed has established Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation Limited and appointed members to the Board of Directors. The Corporation was established as a government companies with hundred percent government shares.

Madulu Mohamed Waheed was appointed as the Chairman of the Corporation and Ibrahim Haleel was appointed as the Managing Director.

Other members appointed to the Board are: Aminath Najeeb; Ahmed Naseer; Mariyam Waheeda; Abdulla Haseen; Adam Shareef and Mohamed Yasir.
